The BBC Symphony Orchestra has played a central role at the heart of British musical life since its inception in 1930; and as the flagship orchestra of the BBC it provides the backbone of the BBC Proms with at least a dozen concerts each year including the First and Last Nights. The BBC SO has a strong commitment to 20th-century and contemporary music - recently it has given world premieres of BBC commissions by leading composers such as Magnus Lindberg, Giya Kancheli, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Stuart MacRae and Judith Weir. Commissions from Elliott Carter, Brian Sam Hayden, Vic Hoyland and Matthias Pintscher feature in the 2008-09 season.The BBC Symphony Orchestra is Associate Orchestra of the Barbican, where it performs an annual season of concerts. This year¡Çs highlights include a staged performance of Martinů¡Çs Julietta, under and the launch of Total Immersion, three Composer Days dedicated to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, Tristan Murail and Iannis Xenakis.
JiřÍ Bĕlohlávek took up the post of Chief Conductor in 2006 and he and the BBC SO perform together frequently across the season both in the UK and internationally, and the Orchestra also works regularly with Principal Guest Conductor David Robertson and Conductor Laureate, Sir Andrew Davis.
All concerts are broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and a number are televised, giving the BBC Symphony Orchestra the highest broadcast profile of any UK orchestra. Central to its life are studio recordings for BBC Radio 3 at the Orchestra¡Çs Maida Vale home, some of which are free for the public to attend. In addition the orchestra records for several commercial labels. Its recording of Janacek's The Excursions of Mr Broucek has been awarded this Gramophone Award for Best Opera Recording.
Performing throughout the world, the BBC SO has recently given concerts in Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic and Italy.
The Orchestra is committed to innovative education work. Recent projects include the ambitious programming of over 20 live performances in a day across London as part of Proms Out+About, and a week-long celebration of the music and culture of South America, involving over 3,000 primary schoolchildren. In November this year the orchestra clears its schedules for a week to explore the music of Turkey. Ongoing projects include the BBC Family Music Intro scheme, introducing families to live classical music, and the highly successful BBC SO Family Orchestra.

"¡¦¡¦¡¦ended child prodigies." The Washington Post Review In June 2007, Japanese violinist Mayuko Kamio won the Gold Medal in the 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. During the 2007-2008 season, she appears as soloist with the Bavarian Staatsoper in Munich under Zubin Mehta, the Orchestre National d¡ÇIle de France under Jean Deroyer, the NHK Symphony under James Judd, the Tokyo Symphony under Naoto Otomo, and the Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra under Okko Kamu, as well as recitals in both home and abroad including Carnegie Hall in NY. Ms. Kamio made her concerto debut in Tokyo at the age of ten under the baton of Charles Dutoit, in a concert broadcast on NHK television. Since then, she has appeared as soloist with the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zurich with Eliahu Inbal, the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, Boston Pops conducted by Keith Lockhart, and on tour with the Russian National Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, the Prague Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic, and appeared in Japan as soloist with the Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto, NHK, Osaka, Sapporo and Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestras. As a winner of the 1998 Menuhin International Violin Competition, the youngest artist ever to win the award, Ms. Kamio performed with the Orchestra National de Lille with Lord Menuhin conducting. In May 2003, she made her New York concerto debut with the Orchestra of St. Luke¡Çs, and recital debut at Lincoln Center in January 2005. These performances prompted the New York Times to call Ms. Kamio an ¡Èexciting young musician¡É and ¡Èa radiant talent.¡É Ms. Kamio was born in Osaka, Japan in 1986, and began to play the violin at the age of four. She worked with Koichiro Harada at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and studied in the U.S. with Dorothy Delay at the Aspen Music Festival and the pre-college division of The Juilliard School. She currently attends the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater in Zurich, where she works with Zakhar Bron. Her instrument is a 1727 Stradivarius, previously owned by violinist Joseph Joachim, on loan from Suntory Limited, Japan. |
