Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra

Profile

Established in 1997, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra has been a leading arts organization in the east part of Korea, and positioned as one of top five orchestras in Korea. Under the city government of Wonju, the orchestra has been well-known for not only its artistic excellence but also its wide repertoires from premier contemporary music to classical romantic symphonies, including but not limited to 'Pelleas et Melisande' by Arnold Scho"nberg, 'Little Suite for Strings' in a minor by Carl Nielsen, Bruckner, Brahms and Beethoven Symphonies.

During its short history, less than two decades, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra has shown remarkable achievement. The orchestra invited juvenile musicians as well as mature members to share their musical inspirations, and systemized the management for more advantages to the orchestra. Also the orchestra has built its academic depth by innovative project series starting from the Mozart Festival with Maestro Young-min Park, who is now the Chief Conductor of the orchestra.

Including the participation in the Korean International Music Festival, Great Mountains International Music Festival, and the Korean Orchestra Festival, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra has been regularly receiving invitations from international festivals in Korea and abroad. In collaboration with renowned conductors and soloists, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra is constantly hailed as the most 'young and passionate' orchestra.

Recently, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra met an exciting turning point with welcoming the first Chief Conductor ever for its history. Since its establishment, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra has received highly intensive training by guest principle conductors from all around the world. At the end of 2010, the orchestra announced the return of Maestro Young-min Park as a new Chief Conductor, who is a former principal conductor of Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra and actively working in the international stages such as Musikverein in Vienna and Rudolfinum in Prague. From the beginning of 2011 season, Wonju Philharmonic Orchestra is experiencing the most rapid growth and thrilling changes with its Chief Conductor and bringing its standards to the next level.
